Naomi Campbell and Tinie Tempah have backed a campaign from the London Mayor to promote gender equality in the capital through New Year’s resolutions.

A host of celebrities and other Londoners have signed up to Sadiq Khan’s equality campaign, called #BehindEveryGreatCity, which calls on people and businesses to set equality goals for 2018.

Khan hopes the campaign will show that, regardless of gender, people have a right to the same opportunities and progress.

“Over the next year, and beyond, I commit to redoubling my efforts to fight for gender equality,” said Khan. “I will be encouraging Londoners to celebrate the women of all ages, ethnicities, faiths and backgrounds who make London the greatest city in the world.”

He added that he is a “proud feminist” and is “really encouraged” by the support that has been shown towards the campaign so far.

The capital’s annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Trafalgar Square will also be themed around the campaign and will celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage in the UK.

Annie Lennox, Aretha Franklin, Florence Welch and Ariana Grande will be among the stars performing at this year’s all-female New Year’s show and fireworks display.

“It is incredibly important to mark the centenary of this momentous time in history, but also to take stock of the huge inequalities women still face 100 years on from first winning the right to vote,” said Khan. “That’s why I’m determined to take action. My #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign will work with Londoners and businesses to remove barriers to women’s success and level the playing field.”

The global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade in 2017. Although the UK was one of the most improved countries, the World Economic Forum said it could add £250 billion to its gross domestic product by achieving gender parity.

Separate data from the Office of National Statistics found that the gender pay gap has only closed by 0.5 per cent in London in the past 20 years. It currently stands at 14.6 per cent.
